Lutheran Mission Finschhafen/Lutheran Mission Madang, Program Files 1922-1942.

This series comprises records pertaining to the Lutheran missions at the Finschhafen and Madang fields in the New Guinea territory. These records were generated as a record of work completed in these fields during the time they were jointly administered by the Iowa Synod, later the American Lutheran Church (ALC), and the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia. The records also include the period in time after 1932 when the ALC assumed sole administrative control of the Madang field. The records are from 1922-1942 and comprise meeting minutes, and draft copies of legal and incorporation documents. Records for the Lutheran Mission Finschhafen field comprise a small number of minutes from executive council meetings, its industrial committee, a school commission, the local conference, and a field conference, but are by no means complete. All minutes for Finschhafen meetings are written in German. The records for the Lutheran Mission Madang (LMM) are more extensive. These include minutes as well as a copy of the constitution and bylaws for the LMM. This is a good source for a general explanation of the Madang mission field and its organizational structure. The other LMM material is primarily meeting minutes. There are minutes for the LMM executive council, field conferences, ministerial conferences, and special conferences and meetings called. Almost all minutes for the LMM are written in English. There are minutes from every field conference meeting except 1930-1931 and any meetings occurring after 1941. Other LMM minutes in this series are not complete sets. In addition to minutes, there are also cover letters that accompanied most field conference minutes and some special meeting minutes. Records are arranged by subject.

The ALC met as a delegate body biennially in October, the time and place of which was determined by the president and Board of Trustees. All boards and standing committees sent their reports to the president at least sixty days before the convention, so that he could have them printed and sent to the delegates twenty days before the biennial meeting.
